Margam County Park | ![]() '.....two hours and a million miles away' With its 240 salmon and trout rivers, hundreds of upland lakes and numerous lowland stillwater venues, as well as 750 miles of coastline, Wales has a wealth of fine fishing to offer. |
||||
| Margam
County Park is situated some 20 minutes from the fishing holiday
accommodation and offers a fun day out for all the family. In addition
to three superb fishing lakes, there are deer and adventure
playgrounds. New Pond is a trout fishery; Furze Mill Lake and Fish Pond offer excellent coarse fishing. Fish Pond is set amidst hilly woodland and fringed by magnificent rhododendrons. Although mostly quite shallow, the water holds bream up to 7lb in weight and super rudd of over 2lb. Furze Mill Lake, also in Margam Park, was stocked with coarse fish in 1994, although carp well in excess of the original stocking weight have been caught and this suggests that a resident population already existed. The fishing is of high quality with skimmer bream, rudd, tench, eels, crucian carp and, of course, common and mirror carp. Most baits will take fish here, with sweetcorn, bread and maggot being especially productive. (Boilies and particle baits are not permitted.) |

Best of Both Worlds |
|||||
| Fendrod
Lake in Swansea holds carp approaching 30lb, while the nearby Singleton
Park is close to a children's play area, the beach and a pub, making it
an ideal family venue. This corner of Wales boasts several council-run fisheries accessible on a day ticket basis, including various lakes in the Llanelli area, and The Gnoll Country Park in Neath. Many of the newer fisheries have been developed with disabled anglers in mind. Wheelchair access is very good at White Springs, Pontardulais, and at Maesgwyn, near Swansea. |
In South Wales you don't have to make that painful choice between a family holiday and a fishing holiday; here you really can have the best of both worlds. |

| Specimen
anglers in search of big carp will find they are spoilt for choice in
South-west Wales. Here are just a few of the still waters known
for providing specimen carp: Meadow Lake, Porthcawl; Fendrod Lake,
Swansea; Gnoll Lake, Neath; White Springs, Pontardulais; Treoes
Lake, Bridgend; and at Llyn Carfan, near Whitland. Pike are also a popular quarry in this area. Winter pike of over 30lb can be caught at Bosherston Lily Ponds, near Pembroke; and at at Bishops Palace, Carmarthen. The Tennant Canal, controlled by Skewen Anglers, fishes well in winter. Incidentally, all of these venues provide good tench fishing during summer months, and have a high conservation value, reflected in the status of sites of special scientific interest. |

| Specimen
pike and big bags of bream are among the catches at Llangorse Lake near
Brecon (45 minutes from holiday accommodation). This is the
largest natural stillwater in South Wales. Because of its shallow,
weedy margins, Llangorse is fishable only from boats available at
the lakeside caravan site. |

Ideal for Youngsters | |||||
|
If you are accustomed to hard-fished
venues where boilies and particle baits are essential to success, why
not step back in time and use more traditional methods on the
unpressured fisheries of South-west Wales? South Wales is an ideal place to introduce youngsters to coarse fishing. Having caught their first fish - and probably many different species - they will return home hooked on angling for a lifetime. What finer gift could a youngster receive? |
